Job Information

We are recruiting for Senior Data Managers to be based at MRCG Fajara and MRCG Basse respectively. The post-holders will work closely with the database development team to ensure that the study databases meet the data collection needs of studies. They will develop, organise and implement quality control and cleaning processes of databases that require extensive liaison and tactful communication with field personnel as well as with other senior staff.

Essential requirements:

  • BSc or equivalent in computing, data management or a related subject.
  • Extensive work experience and proficiency in data management - with preference given to data management for medical research.
  • Diverse expertise in managing complex data from different systems.
  • Previous experience dealing accurately and efficiently with large volumes of data from varied sources in multidisciplinary research projects.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, analytical skills and judgement.
  • Working knowledge of Good Clinical Practices (GCP), Clinical Research, Clinical trial process and related regulatory requirements and terminology.
  • Working knowledge of Clinical database applications.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Experience of training and supervising staff.
  • Good working knowledge of database management software (MS Access essential and SQL Server preferred).
  • Systematic approach and attention to detail.
  • The ability to conduct study activities according to the protocols.
  • The ability to work co-operatively in a team.
  • Understanding of the confidential nature of the work.

Desirable:

  • MSc in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Management or related field.
  • Previous experience working in a research/clinical lab field.
  • Experience in supporting electronic data capture processes.
  • Experience in using OpenClinica or any Clinical Data Management System.

 

The salary will be paid in Grade 2, 30 Points of MRCG’s payscale at a net monthly salary of

56, 498 Dalasi. This converts to a net pay of $1, 313 approximately per month using the prevailing Dalasi/USD exchange rate.

 

Please note that the salary will be paid in Dalasi and that the USD figure quoted is only given as a guide.

 

For displaced staff the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, displacement allowance for spouse and children, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects.

 

The appointment is for 2 years initially and is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

Job Information

The Vaccines and Immunity Theme is currently engaged in an ongoing series of clinical vaccine trials ranging from phase 1 (including first-in-child and first-in-infant cohorts) to phase 4 trials of various sizes, designs and endpoints. The majority of trials are investigator-led and internally-sponsored by the MRC Unit The Gambia although we also work with other non-commercial and, on occasions, commercial sponsors.

The phase 3 PCV10 (Pneumosil™) trial  is a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial which is designed to meet the requirements for future licensure and WHO prequalification of the vaccine allowing the vaccine to be purchased/distributed through GAVI/UNICEF to low and middle income countries.  The vaccine is manufactured by the Serum Institute of India Pvt Ltd and the pneumococcal serotypes included in the vaccine are specifically targeted at those prevalent in low and middle income countries.

The trial is sponsored and funded by PATH Vaccine Solutions.  We have recently completed a phase 1/2 age-de-escalation trial with the same vaccine at the MRC Unit The Gambia which has provided the safety and immunogenicity data required to support the phase 3 trial.

We are looking for Research Clinicians to support the Principal Investigator and Clinical Trial Coordinator in the conduct of the study and trial team of Nurses and Field Assistants. S/he will conduct medical assessments for study participants and provide the necessary medical care following the study specific procedures.

 

Essential

MB BS or equivalent

Experience of staff management

Excellent written and spoken English

The salary will be paid in Grade 2, 30 Points of MRCG’s payscale. Candidates with FWACP Part 2 or equivalent will be appointed as Research Clinician II on Grade 2, 32 Points.

The post holder will be responsible for providing a consultancy and analysis service across a range of quantitative bio-informatics applications for all themes.

The post holder will be responsible for accomplishing the following:

  • Carrying out bioinformatics analyses of large data sets from human, vector and pathogen population genetics studies.
  • Data management of large genetic data sets.
  • Developing applications that apply state of the art algorithms to relevant data sets.
  • Contribute to grant writing, experimental design, power and sample size calculations.
  • Create publication quality data visualizations.
  • Oversee the establishment of a high performance computing centre.
  • To ensure that all safety precautions recommended by the SOP are in place; reporting any safety incidents to the Line Manager and Head of Health & Safety.
  • To undertake further training commensurate with the needs of the post.
  • To perform any other duties consistent with the remit of the post.

This is a core-funded position within the Statistic and Bioinformatics department. The incumbent will also be expected to take a lead in the establishment of a high performance computing centre.

Essential:
  • MSc/PhD in bioinformatics/computational biology with strong quantitative background (mathematics Mathematics or physical Physical sciencesSciences)

The MRC Unit The Gambia is the Council’s largest establishment conducting medical research in a developing country.  The Unit aims to improve the health of people in low-income countries by excellence in multi-disciplinary research programmes.

We are looking for a Research Clinician to work on the NeoInnate Project. The project is undertaking a large neonatal observational cohort study at Serrekunda General Hospital in Kanifing to assess neonatal nutritional immunity and its role in neonatal susceptibility to infection.

The post-holder will be based at Serrekunda General Hospital (Kanifing) and will work on a BMGF funded study looking at neonatal iron metabolism in full term, preterm and low birth weight neonates.

S/he will be mainly responsible for the recruitment and clinical care of study participants (i.e. mothers and their neonates). Advise and oversee the eligibility of all recruited mothers into the project, assess neonates using the exclusion criteria and New Ballard Score. S/he will work closely with all members of the project team and will be required to conduct surveillance for morbidity and mortality among study participants, report clinical events to the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator.

 

The appointment is up to 30th April 2018 in the first instance.

Essential:

  • MB BS/MD or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Excellent communication skills including scientific discussion and writing.
  • Proven experience of clinical care of pregnant mothers and neonates.
  • Experience with computer-based analyses and presentation of experimental data.

Candidates with part 2 FWACP/MRCG will be appointed as Research Clinician 2 with a take home salary of 74,252.73 equivalent to $1, 650 per month using the prevailing USD/Dalasi exchange rate.

The Laboratory Services Platform of MRCG comprises Clinical and Research Laboratories equipped with modern cutting-edge technologies to support research across the three Themes.

Basic genome analysis comprising DNA sequencing and fragment analysis by Sanger sequencing (ABI Genetic Analyzer 3130xl) and various DNA genotyping by real-time and digital PCR and array technologies are supported on the platform. Major recent acquisition of next-Generation DNA sequencing (NGS) technologies (Illumina MiSeq and ABI Ion Torrent PGM sequencer), coupled with increase in the number of research projects conducting studies involving genome analysis, have driven the need for a dedicated Genomics Facility. The facility will establish and streamline genome and data analysis processes to support cutting-edge genomics research in the Unit, providing competitive advantage within the sub-region, in attracting research collaborations.

We are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced person to lead the Genomics Facility at MRCG Fajara. The post holder will establish procedures and protocols for conducting genomics research, including whole genome and high-throughput sequence analysis, as service, with a plan to develop in-house capacity for sustained service delivery. The remit of the role is focused on establishing a robust Genomics Facility and the strategic development and expansion of the service, in line with the Unit’s West African strategy.

Essential requirements:

  • PhD in Medical Sciences from an accredited University with significant experience in the management of Research Laboratories.
  • Considerable experience of running Next-Gen Sequencing (NGS) technologies and management of large and complex diagnostic and genetic data including whole genome sequencing.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics scripting language applicable to molecular data management and analysis including but not limited to Perl and R.
  • Proven ability to conduct training in systems and processes as they pertain to research and/or research laboratory environments.
  • Experience in training laboratory-based staff and developing and executing competency based training plans.
  • Demonstrated budgetary and cost management skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Experience in the safe and legally compliant use and effective management of biological samples including pathogens and human tissue.
  • Excellent organizational and staff management skills with the ability to co-supervise staff with other Managers, recognizing the potential for conflicts of interest and how best to mitigate these.
  • Experience of working with people from different disciplines and cultures.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working in capacity development in Africa and/or the developing world.
  • Knowledge of RNAseq analysis.
  • Substantial experience in large sample management and molecular biology assays.
  • Experience in implementing change management, for example implementing new ways of working or approaches which support and ensure quality improvement around laboratory output, practices and safety.

The post will be for 3 years, extendable by mutual agreement.

An Attractive salary will be paid in MRCG’s Grade 2, 40 Points with a minimum net monthly salary of GMD 128, 465. This is equivalent to a take home pay of approximately $2, 919 per month using the prevailing USD/Dalasi exchange rate.
