Job Information | MRC Unit The Gambia is the leading research centre in sub-Saharan Africa and has been carrying out internationally competitive research into tropical medicine for over 70 years. Our current research agenda focuses on three themes: Disease Control & Elimination; Nutrition; Vaccines & Immunity. Looking towards the future, we are aiming to push forward with a West Africa expansion strategy with new and challenging areas, reflecting changes in national and global health priorities. The Quality Manager will be the champion for the Unit’s Quality Management System (QMS); maintaining and strengthening the current system, whilst also developing it in areas that are key for the Unit’s overall strategy. S/he will work closely with the research themes as well as other scientific and support areas, and in particular with the Clinical Trials Support Manager. It is anticipated over a 2-3 year period the post-holder will develop West African capacity and talent to support biomedical research in the subregion. The post holder is will administer, maintain, develop and evolve the MRC Unit The Gambia’s quality management system to ensure best practice in research and medical laboratories in accordance with the principles of ISO 15189:2012, MRC Good Research Practice, ICH Good Clinical Practice, Good Clinical Laboratory Practice, ISO 17025, and other statutory, legislative and policy requirements. S/he will aim for and realize continual improvement in quality systems and procedures.

The Clinical Services Department comprises a busy 42-bed ward, outpatients’ department, Gate (triage) clinic, X-ray department and is supported by routine clinical, diagnostic laboratories. The CSD also has an endoscopy unit and trained endoscopy nurses, providing the opportunity for a suitably qualified applicant to complete regular endoscopsy and/or bronchoscopy lists. There are also plans to set up a peritoneal dialysis facility together with colleagues at the University Teaching Hospital. Approximately 50,000 new patients are seen at the MRCG’s clinical facilities each year, including Gambians, nationals of countries in the sub-region. The out-patient department has a number of specialist clinics for children and young adults with cardiac, renal and liver disease. We seek to appoint a consultant paediatrician or physician to the role of Head of Clinical Services. Based at MRCG’s main site at Fajara, the post holder will lead all clinical areas, make a significant contribution to the implementation of the Unit’s research plans, and oversee clinical activities at the field sites in Keneba and Basse.

Job Information | The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Council’s largest establishment conducting medical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in low-income countries by excellence in multi-disciplinary research programmes. We are looking for a Research Clinician for the NASIMMUNE Study. This study will undertake detailed immunogenicity studies of the intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) and interactions with the nasopharyngeal microbiome in Gambian children. The study aims to establish baseline factors and early immunological events following intranasal immunization with LAIV that are associated with later robust mucosal and systemic adaptive anti-influenza immunity. It will also assess whether LAIV modulates changes in the nasopharyngeal microbiome, with a particular focus on Streptococcus pneumonia and Staphylococcus aureus. The Research Clinician will provide clinical care, adequate documentation, and supervise the field work according to study protocol. S/he will conduct surveillance for morbidity and mortality among study participants. S/he will also be required to provide up to date research activities and liaise with the sponsors, local trial staff and safety monitors. The post is for 18 months in the first instance. Job Information | The Nutrition Theme of the MRC Unit The Gambia is primarily based at the Keneba Field Site, Kiang West, Lower River Region. This theme’s research focuses largely on maternal and child health and has four major research themes concentrating on: early growth and development; iron, infection and anaemia; nutritional genetics and bone health. Within these research portfolios, is the BRIGHT Project, which is a new project funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The main objective of the project is to initiate work on infants’ brain development.
Key Responsibilities The post-holder will be based at MRCG Keneba and responsible for the operational management and co-ordination of all scientific aspects of the study in The Gambia, as determined by the Principal Investigators. He/she will work closely with all members of the Project team, including field, laboratory, data and clinical teams. Job Information | MRCG Keneba has an international reputation for its work on diet-disease interactions in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the great majority of research in Keneba has been directed towards nutrition in recent decades we strongly encourage and welcome researchers from the Disease Control and Elimination (DCE) and Vaccines and Immunity (VI) themes to engage with research in Keneba. Most of the past work has focussed on growth failure and its associated pathology in children, and on the nutrition of reproductive women. This work continues to be broadened and forms the basis of a number of on-going projects which fall under the four sub-programmes. Early Growth & Development; Iron, Infection & Anaemia; Calcium, Vitamin D and Bone Health; and Nutritional Genetics and Epigenetics. Keneba Field Station, based approximately 100 miles by road from the capital, Banjul, and the main MRC Unit The Gambia at Fajara, consists of a self-contained site with laboratories, a clinic, administrative infrastructure, staff housing, and all necessary support facilities such as generators, transport, computing, etc. Keneba is attached to a remote village and serves a number of other villages in the West Kiang region. The post holder will be responsible for conducting research projects within the overall priority areas for the Nutrition Theme of MRC Unit The Gambia (MRCG). They will also be expected to lead in the local management of scientific, financial, administrative and clinical aspects of the Nutrition Theme’s research at MRCG Keneba Field Station. Main duties / key responsibilities: Key responsibilities are divided into the following broad areas: Scientific: The mission of the Nutrition Theme at MRCG is to contribute to international efforts to improve the health and welfare of poor people through basic and applied research. The post holder will be responsible, in partnership with Professor Prentice, for maximising productivity in this respect and to:
Administrative: The holder of this post will assume overall administrative responsibility for Keneba Field Station reporting to the Head of the Nutrition Theme (Professor Prentice), The Unit Director (Prof D’Alessandro) and Director of Operations (Mr Vives-Tomas). This includes: the recurrent budget; capital equipment and capital estates planning and expenditure; managing and appraising staff; transport; buildings and grounds; safety; data management; and ensuring that SCC/Ethics approval is obtained for all research. The Field Station Administrator in Keneba, and administrative staff at MRC Unit The Gambia, under the Director of Operations, provide support in all these matters. Staff in each of these categories are line-managed from MRCG Fajara.
External liaison: The Head of Station is responsible for local representation and promotion of the Nutrition Theme and Keneba Field Station. Among other duties the post holder will attend the Joint Coordinating Meetings with the Gambian Government and take a proactive approach in maintaining strong links with relevant government departments, the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA) and international agencies.
Clinical: The post holder will be required to work in close collaboration with the Head of Clinical Services to oversee the clinical aspects of the field station. The field station runs an outpatient, ambulatory and emergency service for local villagers. Teaching and Training Duties The Nutrition Theme has a strong cadre of PhD and MSc students and young post-docs and Keneba hosts medical and nutrition students on electives. In addition the MRCG runs a number of training programmes for junior staff members. You will be expected to take part in teaching activities and community health education.
Key Responsibilities Manage all aspects of your own research and the research programmes in Keneba. Assist in managing and planning resources for Keneba. Manage and appraise the more senior field station staff. Oversee and perform (if applicable) clinical duties. Write scientific reports and publications. Work under pressure and within the constraints of an overseas site. Assist with research funding applications as required. Any other duties as appropriate to a Band 3 post.
Education / Qualifications / Training required: Essential: PhD or equivalent in a nutrition-related topic or medical degree. Clinical training in paediatrics to at least MRCPCH level or equivalent (if clinical appointee) Desirable: DTM&H qualification or equivalent (if clinical appointee). MD or PhD (if clinical appointee)
Previous work experience required: Essential: Evidence of research excellence.

Job Information | The Clinical Services Department at Fajara runs a 42-bed ward devoted to the care of acute paediatric and adult medical cases and a busy out patient department seeing over 50, 000 patients a year. The ward and OPD are staffed by well qualified nursing and auxiliary staff and there is a high staff to patient ratio. The service is supported by a GCLP and ISO 15189 accredited clinical laboratory offering a 24/7 service and an excellent radiology department with digital x-ray, contrast studies, ultrasound and echocardiography. An on-site endoscopy suite enables us to complete upper GI endoscopy and bronchoscopies. The department has implemented an electronic medical records system for all patient encounters. Malaria, tuberculosis, acute respiratory infections, HIV and non-communicable diseases such as asthma, nutritional disorders, renal diseases, cardiovascular disease and hepatocellular carcinoma are all very common. There are no facilities for managing either surgical or obstetric cases. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the post Consultant Clinician to be based at MRCG Fajara. The post-holder will support the Head of Clinical Services who is responsible for the Unit’s Clinical Services at the main station at Fajara and the upcountry Field Stations, and has overall responsibility for the health care of all MRCG personnel (approximately 1000) and their immediate families. S/he will also work closely with the Head of Clinical Services in overseeing the out-patient and in-patient facilities, the development and training of clinically qualified and clinical support staff as well as in the training of students from the University of The Gambia Medical School.
